If an alleged leak is to be believed, a Monsters Inc-themed world might be making an appearance Kingdom Hearts 3.

The screenshots, posted on NeoGAF successor ResetEra, show Sora, Donald and Goofy with monstrous appearances, fighting large Unversed (from Birth by Sleep) in the main lobby of Monsters Inc. It also shows Sulley and Mike as party members.

As much as I want this to be real, there is a whole mountain of salt to take this with. The fonts and languages used on the overlaying text aren’t consistent as you’d expect from internal documents, and the ResetEra poster admits it comes from the friend of a friend of an acquaintance, which places this very firmly into “reasonable a hoax” territory. Plus, the random reappearance of Unversed enemies, when Sora and co. have only faced Dream Eaters, Nobodies and Heartless up to now feels odd.

On the other hand, I don’t recognise the 3D models for Mike or Sulley as being from any other game, and Sora, Donald and Goofy’s monsterly designs look reasonable in-line with their other appearances. It also makes sense that Square Enix would go all-out with Pixar, having finally opened that can of worms with the introduction of a Toy Story-themed world.

From a purely anecdotal perspective as someone who collects Monsters Inc merchandise, you’d be surprised at how popular the film is in Japan. Sure, Pixar series like The Incredibles or Inside Out would make more sense thematically, but Monsters Inc has the domestic popularity.

I’m trying desperately to contain myself… but it’s MONSTERS INC. As in my favourite film. As in the thing I have a whole shelf in my room dedicated to. I’d love absolutely nothing more than for this to be real. Oh my god, please be real. I haven’t stopped crying. This might be real.

Joe is LPVG’s resident hardware nerd. If it’s overpriced and has gaudy RGB lighting, he’s probably drooling over it. He loves platformers, MMOs, RPGs, hack ‘n slashers and FPS, with his favourite games being Mirror’s Edge, Left 4 Dead, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Oblivion and Dead Space. Don’t ask him about his unhealthily large Monsters Inc memorabilia collection. Seriously, just don’t ask…
