Mirage: Arcane Warfare, the magic-flavoured follow up to multiplayer hack-em-up Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, is going to be free on Steam for 24 hours to celebrate a significant, permanent price drop.

Announced through the Steam Community, the game will be absolutely free for 24 hours from 10AM PT (6PM GMT) today (September 6). If you get it during that time, you’ll keep the game forever. After that, the price will be permanently slashed to $9.99.

I love Chivalry, so hearing there would be a magical follow-up really excited me. I even got a review copy of it… only to find it was totally and completely dead. The player peaks have dropped into single digits since then – and a monthly average of just three people – which means finding even a single well-populated match has been literally impossible. Reviewing a multiplayer game nobody plays is both difficult and kind of pointless, so it’s sadly just sat there in my Steam library ever since.

The one match I managed to get was fun, with a variety of character classes and their own magical abilities giving a refreshing take on Chivalry’s melee combat, although the maps did lack the flow and progression its medieval predecessor had. Hopefully this promotion will be enough to build up a steady community, because I still need to write that review…

Joe is LPVG’s resident hardware nerd. If it’s overpriced and has gaudy RGB lighting, he’s probably drooling over it. He loves platformers, MMOs, RPGs, hack ‘n slashers and FPS, with his favourite games being Mirror’s Edge, Left 4 Dead, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Oblivion and Dead Space. Don’t ask him about his unhealthily large Monsters Inc memorabilia collection. Seriously, just don’t ask…
