If you’ve devoured Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4, but not gone back to the earlier, isometric days, now is your perfect chance. Today, Steam’s giving away Fallout, the one that started it all, for free to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Just head over to the game’s Steam page to add it to your library. This isn’t a limited free weekend, once you’ve claimed it, its yours forever.

Fallout is 20 years old today (September 30, 2017), so by modern standards the game might be a little bit archaic. Fortunately, that’s where the Fixt mod comes in. Offering essential fixes, increased resolutions, and an improved UI, it also optionally includes some cut content and a total rebalance.

If you’re heading in to Fallout for the first time, Fixt might as well be considered mandatory. Just install Fallout, run the Fixit executable, and follow the instructions. It’s easy-peasy.

The giveaway is incredibly short, ending at 11:59PM pacific on September 30 (7:59AM BST Sunday, October 1), so get on it right now. You owe it to yourself to see where the series began.

Joe is LPVG’s resident hardware nerd. If it’s overpriced and has gaudy RGB lighting, he’s probably drooling over it. He loves platformers, MMOs, RPGs, hack ‘n slashers and FPS, with his favourite games being Mirror’s Edge, Left 4 Dead, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Oblivion and Dead Space. Don’t ask him about his unhealthily large Monsters Inc memorabilia collection. Seriously, just don’t ask…
