Thanks to a fairly substantial datamine, we may know some of the big things coming to The Division over the next few months.

Taking to Reddit, miner iamunkn0wn has uncovered a lot of evidence that we will be seeing Central Park added as a new section of the Dark Zone, and with it new Dark Zone side missions. They also found that we might be getting the highly requested arena-based PvP mode at last, special events, and of course new vanity items.

The hints of Central Park come from subtitles present in the current 1.5 build of the game that don’t correspond with anything said in-game. They discuss Central Park being “opened up” as a new DZ07 zone to the north of the current map, with better loot and tougher enemies to be found:

“Agent, we’ve started pushing further into the Dark Zone. We’re unlocking the gates that lead north towards Central Park. I need you to get up there to do a little recon. Let me know what you see, and stay safe. It’s not exactly friendly territory.”

“Look, there’s no room. There’s just no room any more. The park is full. They can’t keep up with the dying. The transport trucks are dumping bodies outside and… and headed back for more. Jesus, I’ve never seen so much death. They have to seal it off. No one should ever see this…”

“I’m saying it’s an opportunity. The JTF, they can’t dig graves fast enough. So they are just taking the bodies, all of the bodies, and dumping them in Central Park. Just picking ’em up and throwing ’em in. I mean if you get a decent gas mask, maybe some hand sanitizer- you could find some serious shit in there. If they can’t even bury ’em, they sure as hell aren’t going through the pockets. But that doesn’t have to stop us.”

“Not exactly scenic New York City, is it? But at least we got some idea of what we’re getting into. Thanks, Agent.”

Iamunkn0wn also found discussion of “SHD tactical terminals” from a currently unknown character called Kekich. These terminals appear to be part of a quest line that revolved around the Dark Zone, narratively very similar to the Dark Zone supply drops and the recent survival DLC, being focused around Division technology being dropped into the zone that must be recovered:

“Hey. Agent. I need you to check in with the new guy, Kekich, over at the terminal. He’s got something big on his hands, and he could use your help.”

“Oh, hey, Agent. What you are looking at is one of the SHD tactical terminals airdropped into the DZ before we pulled out. They were supposed to help coordinate ops, but, well that didn’t work out so great. So they’ve just been sitting there rusting, until now. They’re waking up, and they are loaded with operational data we need. The terminal will bring you up to speed on how to get them fully online.”

“Good to see ya, Agent. These are the SHD tactical terminals that got left behind when we pulled out. They are loaded with operational data. We need to get to them and download what we can before anybody else does.”

“Agent, this is Kekich. swing by when you get a chance. We’ve got these SHD tactical terminals left behind in the Dark Zone. They’re loaded with heavy duty operational data, and we need to get to that data before any Rogue agents get the chance. We’re gonna need your help with this one.”

“Agent, before we pulled out of the Dark Zone, the brass air-dropped in some SHD tech stations to coordinate local ops. Thing is, those tactical sites are still in there, sitting on all sorts of intel. We want it back, and so does every Rogue agent in the city. We need you to get a team together and download whatever you can from those stations before someone else does.”

The new PvP mode comes as part of a slightly earlier datamine. Files discuss zones being taken and regained by Division and Rogue Agents, suggesting a capture point-like mode with players on each team vying for control. Iamunkn0wn points out that, while none of this is confirmed, data for the Survival DLC was found in the game as early as 1.3 (Survival was released alongside 1.5). It’s unclear as to whether this mode will be part of the upcoming 1.6 update, an update after that, or as part of the Last Stand DLC, if it ever comes at all.

It’s worth noting that datamines don’t confirm anything other than something was in development at one point in time. These could be elements Massive toyed with, or they could be the foundations for features that are scrapped months from now. You should take everything discovered with a whopping great fistful of salt until officially confirmed.

Even then, these features sound very exciting. Central Park could introduce an interesting rural aspect to the game, and I’m especially eager to see how trees and foliage changes the flow of a PvP encounter. Having more quests and stuff to do in the Dark Zone is always good, as ganking others and chasing landmarks is only engaging for so long.

The arena PvP mode is something ltos of players have wanted since launch, but an increased interest in it has come since the Survival DLC, which puts every player on an even playing field by stripping them of their equipment. A mode that takes this element and applies it to a more traditional shootout could be really dang good.

If this is what The Division’s year two has in store, I’m probably going to be stuck with this bloody game for way longer than I ever expected.

Joe is LPVG’s resident hardware nerd. If it’s overpriced and has gaudy RGB lighting, he’s probably drooling over it. He loves platformers, MMOs, RPGs, hack ‘n slashers and FPS, with his favourite games being Mirror’s Edge, Left 4 Dead, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Oblivion and Dead Space. Don’t ask him about his unhealthily large Monsters Inc memorabilia collection. Seriously, just don’t ask…
