In No Man’s Sky, discussions of gender are a little more complex than they tend to be in common vocabulary on Earth.

Where on Earth we typically discuss the “male” and “female” gender, with agender, non-binary and other gendered terms straying from a binary view often left in the realm of specifically progressive speech, No Man’s Sky has a far more varied vocabulary with which to describe fauna encountered on your travels.

Sure, a new alien species you find might be male or female, but it might also be vectorised, radical, rational, prime or exotic. While radical and vectorised gender possibly refer to species with mating systems utilising viruses as symbiotic genetic carriers, I instead chose to believe they are descriptions of a gendered system where one member does badass kickflips, and the counterpart scales up infinitely without degradation.

So without further stalling, here’s a couple of genders we would like to see added to No Man’s Sky which would be right at home next to our radical, prime, and vectorised animal friends.

Polynomial

A species expressing Polynomial gender features a gendered system where an individual’s stats are all raised to positive integer powers.

An example of Polynomial gender might look like 5x3 2x2 + x 13, x2y3, where X represents their level of awesomeness, and Y represents the number of times the species can sprout new wings when theirs are damaged.

This is not to be confused with the more specific terms monomial, binomial and trinomial gender.

Superset

Superset gender creatures contain an entire creature of a different gender inside them. As a superset gender creature, they contain all the features of their own gender, but also all sets of gendered data within themselves. If a superset creature contains another superset creature, all sets of data included in that superset creature are a part of the first superset creature.

Badass

A species with a badass gender simply doesn’t give a fuck what you think. They kick down the door of your spaceship, give you a bunch of chocolates, whisk you off your feet before holding you in their strong, beefy arms while mowing down a field of sentinels one-handed.

Oh, and they also have a built-in urge to blow stuff up and walk away without looking at it. They’re just kind of like that.

Modular

Modular gender is a system where typically gendered elements in the species can be switched out independently at will. If we were to look at a hypothetical model of modular gender on an Earth bovine level, modular cows and bulls could present with udders and horns.

Modular gender is the pick ‘n mix, all-you-can-eat buffet of gender. Or maybe it’s more like building and later customising a high-end gaming PC by swapping out the graphics card for antennae and a large thorax.

So, what did you think of our list of suggested genders to add to No Man’s Sky? I kind of love the idea of genders being named after cool words we don’t normally see associated with gender, almost as much as I love calling this particular game The Sky Where Men are Forbidden. Messing with language is fun.

Laura's gaming journey began in the 90′s when she was given a SNES by her older brother with Mario paint. From that day video games were all she thought about day or night, be it playing them, designing them, discussing them or writing about them.
